Geomagnetic storm update

Geomagnetic storm forecast

Is 2024 the year of aurora?

Geomagnetic Storm Update - 11th October 2024

Aurora were seen across the UK after the arrival of a coronal mass ejection on 10th October 2024. Possible chance of further geomagnetic storms on 11th October.
More information on the storm.

Geomagnetic Storm Forecast - 9th October 2024

A full-halo coronal mass ejection was seen leaving the Sun on 9th October 2024, which may lead to geomangetic storms during 10th-11th October.

More information on the storm.

Blog: Will 2024 be the Year of the Aurora?

The Sun's approximate eleven-year activity cycle is predicted to peak this year, prompting BGS scientists to anticipate that 2024 will be the 'Year of the Aurora'.

Come work with us!

We have a vacancy within the Geomagnetism Team. We are looking to recruit an IT Specialist - Geomagnetism & Space Weather (apply by 9th October 2024).

Old records and new data for space weather studies

Four recent papers on various aspects space weather have been published: (1) on GICs in the UK power grid Huebert et al. (2024); (2) GICs in the UK railway network Patterson et al. (2024); (3) high frequency magnetic field line vibrations Hodnett et al. (2024); and (4) digital data from the Carrington 1859 storm Beggan et al. (2024).

About BGS Geomagnetism

The Geomagnetism team measures, records, models and interprets variations in the Earth’s natural magnetic fields.

Our data and expertise help to develop scientific understanding of change in the Earth and the environment, from deep within the core out into space.

We also provide geomagnetic products and services to industry and to academic colleagues and we use our knowledge for information and education.
