Geomagnetic Storm Warning - 4th August 2011

_________________________________________________________

BRITISH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY: NATIONAL GEOMAGNETIC SERVICE
GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING
_________________________________________________________

Over the last 3 days there have been three solar flares, each
more energetic than the previous. (M1, M6 and M9 X-ray class on
2nd, 3rd and 4th Aug respectively). All three were associated
with Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) that are heading, at least
in part, towards Earth.

Following these events there is an increased risk of a
geomagnetic storm from late on 4-AUG (UK time) to 6-AUG. There
is also an increased chance of viewing the aurora borealis
(or australis) during local night time hours, assuming dark
and clear skies.
